Why Breadth Matters

Learning AI isn't about memorising one tool. It's about understanding the category — knowing which tool to reach for in which situation. If you only know ChatGPT, you'll try to use it for everything, even when a different tool would do the job better and cheaper.

DeepSeek (Free or Very Cheap)

DeepSeek is a Chinese AI model that punches well above its price point. The web interface is free to use. The API costs roughly 1/20th of what OpenAI charges for comparable capability. It's particularly strong at reasoning, coding, and mathematical tasks.

Best for: Reasoning tasks, coding assistance, when you want GPT-4-level quality without the price tag.

Google AI Studio (Free)

Google's AI Studio gives you access to their Gemini models entirely free. You can chat, upload images, analyse documents, and even use it for coding. There are rate limits, but they're generous enough for learning and personal projects.

Best for: General chat, image understanding, long-context tasks (Gemini handles very long documents), integration with Google Workspace.

Why we love it: It handles up to 1 million tokens of context — meaning you can upload entire books and have it analyse them. The free tier is more generous than ChatGPT's.

Mistral Le Chat (Free)

Mistral is a French AI company offering free access to their models via Le Chat. It's fast, capable, and based in the EU (relevant for GDPR compliance). It handles writing, coding, and analysis tasks well.

Best for: Writing, coding, EU-based data processing.

Why we love it: European data sovereignty, fast responses, no credit card required.

Perplexity AI (Free Tier)

Perplexity is a search engine powered by AI. Instead of giving you links, it reads the web and writes you a proper answer with cited sources. The free tier is genuinely useful for research and fact-checking.

Why we love it: It shows its sources, so you can verify everything. It's the antidote to AI making things up.
