How-To: Set Up Perplexity as Your Research Tool

Step 1. — Sign up at perplexity.ai

1. •Go to perplexity.ai and create a free account.
2. • The free tier gives you core AI search with cited answers, including a limited number of Pro Searches.
3. • Pro is $20/month and unlocks the ability to choose the underlying model (GPT-4-class, Claude, etc.), more Pro Searches, file uploads, and deeper research modes.

Start free. You'll know within a week whether the Pro features (mostly model choice and more deep searches) are worth it for the way you work.

Step 2. — Ask research questions

Type a question the way you'd ask a knowledgeable colleague. Perplexity interprets it, searches, reads the top sources, and writes a short answer with inline citations you can click to see the original page.

• •Ask full questions, not keyword strings. "What's the evidence that standing desks improve back pain?" beats "standing desk back pain".
• •Ask follow-up questions in the same thread — Perplexity keeps context, so you can drill deeper without re-explaining.
• •Always click at least one citation to confirm the answer actually matches the source. AI can misread.

Step 3. — Use Focus modes

Focus restricts where Perplexity searches. Pick the right one for the question:

• •Academic — searches scholarly papers. Use for science, medicine, and any question you'd cite in a report.
• •YouTube — searches videos and can summarise their content. Useful for tutorials and talks.
• •Reddit — searches discussion threads. Great for product opinions, real user experiences, troubleshooting.
• •Social — recent posts from social platforms. Useful for current events and live reactions.

Choosing a Focus mode is the single biggest lever for answer quality. Default (web) search is fine for general questions; switch modes the moment the question narrows.

Step 4. — Collections

Collections let you save sources and threads under a topic. Create a collection for a research project (e.g. "Climate adaptation 2026"), add the threads you want to remember, and you can ask new questions that draw only on the sources in that collection. It's a lightweight way to build a scoped knowledge base without uploading files.

Step 6. — Perplexity vs Google

They're complementary. Use each for what it's good at:

A good rule: if you want a fact, name, or page, Google it. If you want an understanding, ask Perplexity. Use both — keep Google for navigation and shopping, Perplexity for actual research.
