SEO and GEO — Getting Found in Search Engines and AI
Traditional search engine optimization (SEO) plus the new frontier: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — making sure AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity cite your content when people ask questions in your space.
Why This Matters Now
For two decades, "being found online" meant one thing: ranking on Google. That's still important — but a second front has opened. People are increasingly asking ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews instead of clicking through pages of blue links. If your business, project, or content isn't cited by these AI systems, you're invisible to a growing share of information seekers.
This guide covers both: traditional SEO fundamentals that still work, and the newer discipline of GEO — making your content the kind that AI models reference, cite, and recommend.
Step 1. SEO Fundamentals — What Still Works
Google's algorithm has evolved dramatically, but these principles remain solid:
- •Write for humans first. Google's current systems (Helpful Content Update, E-E-A-T) reward content that demonstrates real expertise and genuinely helps readers. Keyword-stuffed pages written for bots rank worse, not better.
- •Page titles and meta descriptions matter. The title tag (what appears as the blue link in search results) is still the single most important on-page element. Make it descriptive and compelling — it's your ad copy in the search results.
- •Structure with headings. Use one
h1per page (your main title), thenh2for sections andh3for subsections. This gives search engines a clear outline of what your page covers. - •Internal links are free ranking power. Link between your own pages using descriptive anchor text. It tells search engines which pages are related and distributes authority across your site.
- •Page speed and mobile-friendliness are table stakes. If your site is slow or broken on phones, nothing else matters. Use Google's PageSpeed Insights tool (free) to check.
Step 2. What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of optimizing content so that AI systems — ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity — cite, reference, or recommend it when users ask relevant questions. Unlike SEO, there's no "ranking" position. You're either in the AI's response or you're not.
The key differences from traditional SEO:
| Traditional SEO | Generative Engine Optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in top 10 blue links | Get cited in AI-generated answers |
| Measured by | Position, clicks, impressions | Citations, mentions, brand appearances |
| Optimizes for | Search engine crawlers | AI training data and retrieval systems |
| Key signal | Backlinks and authority | Clarity, structure, and citations |
Step 3. GEO Tactics That Work
Research and practice have identified several techniques that increase the likelihood of AI citation:
- •Cite your sources. AI models weight content that itself cites credible sources. Including references, statistics with sources, and links to authoritative publications signals reliability.
- •Use clear, declarative headings. "How to Set Up a Password Manager" beats "Password Stuff." AI systems extract answers from well-structured content with descriptive section headers.
- •Include statistics and specific data points. "Passwords are the cause of 81% of data breaches (Verizon 2023 DBIR)" is more citable than "passwords are a big problem." AI models prefer content with verifiable facts.
- •Write in complete, self-contained sections. Each section of your page should make sense if read alone. AI retrieval systems often pull individual passages rather than whole pages.
- •Add an author byline with credentials. "Written by Sydney Parker, AI educator and former project coordinator" signals expertise. Anonymous content is less likely to be treated as authoritative.
- •Keep content fresh. AI models have knowledge cutoffs. Content with recent dates and updated information is more likely to be surfaced than a great article from 2021.
Step 4. Technical SEO Basics
These technical factors affect both traditional search engines and AI crawlers:
- •SSL certificate (HTTPS). Non-negotiable. Sites without HTTPS are penalised by every search engine and look untrustworthy to users.
- •XML sitemap. A file that lists every page on your site, submitted to Google Search Console. It's the most reliable way to ensure all your content gets discovered.
- •robots.txt. A file that tells crawlers which pages NOT to index (admin pages, login screens, duplicate content).
- •Schema markup. Extra code that tells search engines what your content IS — a how-to guide, a recipe, a review, an FAQ. This is what generates rich results (star ratings, step-by-step previews) in search results. It also helps AI systems parse your content's structure.
- •Clean URLs.
/how-to/password-managerbeats/page?id=437. Descriptive URLs help both humans and machines understand what's on the page before clicking.
Step 5. Measuring What Works
- •Google Search Console (free) — shows which queries bring people to your site, which pages rank where, and any technical issues Google found. Set this up for every site you own.
- •Self-hosted analytics (Plausible, Umami) — privacy-friendly alternatives to Google Analytics that show you visitor counts, top pages, and traffic sources without tracking cookies. See our self-hosted analytics guide.
- •AI citation monitoring — this is still emerging. Currently you can manually search ChatGPT/Claude/Perplexity for your key topics and see if you're cited. Tools for automated GEO monitoring are being developed but aren't mature yet. Check periodically by asking AI tools: "What are the best resources for [your topic]?"
Step 6. Quick Wins You Can Do Today
- 1.Set up Google Search Console for your domain (free, 10 minutes).
- 2.Make sure every page has a unique, descriptive title tag and meta description.
- 3.Add author bylines with brief credentials to your most important pages.
- 4.Write one genuinely useful, well-structured page answering a specific question your audience actually asks. Publish it. That's worth more than ten SEO tricks.
Tips
- •SEO is a long game. Don't expect results in weeks — think in months. The best time to start was a year ago. The second best time is now.
- •GEO is even newer. The rules are still being written. Being early and building genuine authority in your space is the best strategy available.
- •Don't optimise for AI at the expense of humans. Content that reads like it was written for a robot won't persuade either robots or humans anymore.
- •The single best signal for both SEO and GEO is the same: create content that's so useful people link to it, share it, and cite it. Everything else is optimization around the edges.
